Student Visa UK
Students who wish to further their education in the UK may apply for a Student Visa. This Visa category is only open to individuals who are aged 16 and above. Children who are aged 16 and under should apply for a Child Student Visa.
Your family members (partner or child under age 18) may accompany you to the UK if you are a full-time student on a postgraduate level course (RQF Level 7 or above) that lasts 9 months or longer. If you are a new Government-Sponsored student on a course that lasts longer than 6 months or a student on a Doctorate Extension Scheme, your family members will be able to apply to join you in the UK.

FAQs
What is a UK Student Visa?
A UK Student Visa allows international students aged 16 or over to study an eligible course in Britain with a licensed student sponsor. It is the main visa route for people who want to undertake further or higher education in the UK, including many college, university and postgraduate courses. To qualify, the applicant must usually have an offer from an approved education provider and a valid Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies, known as a CAS.
A Student Visa is not simply based on receiving an offer. The applicant must also meet financial, English language and immigration requirements. Garth Coates can help students prepare a strong application, organise the right documents and address issues before submission, reducing the risk of delays or refusal.
Who can apply for a Student Visa in the UK?
A person can usually apply for a UK Student Visa if they are aged 16 or over, have been offered a place on a qualifying course by a licensed student sponsor, and meet the rules for sponsorship, finances and English language ability. Applicants also need to show that they are genuine students and intend to study the course stated on their CAS. Those aged 16 or 17 may also need parental consent as part of the application.
In some cases, extra requirements may apply. For example, a tuberculosis certificate may be needed if the student is applying from a listed country. Some students on certain postgraduate science and technology courses may also need an ATAS certificate before applying. Garth Coates can assess eligibility carefully and advise on the most suitable route before the application is submitted.
What documents are needed for a UK Student Visa application?
A UK Student Visa application usually requires a set of documents that proves the student meets all relevant immigration requirements. The most important document is the CAS reference issued by the licensed sponsor. Applicants may also need a valid passport, financial evidence, proof of English language ability, and any documents linked to academic qualifications used to secure the course offer.
Depending on the circumstances, additional documents may include:
- A tuberculosis certificate
- Parental consent, if the student is aged 16 or 17
- Evidence of official financial sponsorship or student loan
- Academic documents referred to by the sponsor
The exact paperwork depends on the student’s background and course. Garth Coates can help make sure the application bundle is complete, well presented and consistent with the immigration rules.
How much money do you need for a Student Visa in the UK?
The financial requirement for a UK Student Visa generally includes both course fees and living costs. The tuition amount is usually shown on the CAS, while maintenance funds depend on where the student will study. Current guidance says students need £1,529 per month for up to 9 months if studying in London, or £1,171 per month for up to 9 months if studying outside London.
In many cases, the money must be held for a required period before the application is submitted, unless the applicant is exempt from providing full financial evidence. Funds may come from the student, a parent, an official sponsor, or an approved student loan, depending on the rules. Because financial evidence is a common reason for refusal, Garth Coates can help check whether the funds, statements and supporting documents meet the correct standard.
Do you need to prove your English language ability for a Student Visa?
Yes, many applicants need to prove their English language ability when applying for a UK Student Visa. The required level depends on the course. For degree-level study or above, the standard is usually CEFR level B2. For courses below degree level, the usual requirement is CEFR level B1. Some students meet this requirement through a Secure English Language Test, while others may rely on eligible qualifications or nationality-based exemptions.
English language evidence is an important part of the application because it helps show the student is prepared for study in the UK. Mistakes in this area can create unnecessary problems. Garth Coates can review whether the chosen evidence is acceptable and make sure it fits properly with the sponsor’s records and the rest of the visa application.
When should you apply for a UK Student Visa?
Timing is very important for a UK Student Visa application. Once the student has received their CAS from a licensed sponsor, they must apply within 6 months of receiving it. If applying from outside the UK, the application can usually be made up to 6 months before the course start date. If applying from within the UK, it can usually be made up to 3 months before the course begins.
Leaving the application too late can create unnecessary pressure, especially if extra documents are needed or further checks are required. Students should make sure their passport, CAS, financial evidence and English language documents are ready before applying. Garth Coates can help students build a clear timetable around their enrolment date so the process runs more smoothly and important deadlines are not missed.
Can you extend a Student Visa in the UK?
Yes, many students can extend a Student Visa in the UK if they continue to meet the immigration requirements and are progressing in their studies. This may apply where a student moves on to a new course, needs more time to complete their programme, or continues their education at a higher level. A fresh CAS from a licensed sponsor is usually required, along with evidence that the student still satisfies the relevant rules.
An extension should be prepared carefully, as the Home Office may look closely at academic progression, sponsorship and financial evidence. It is sensible to review the position early rather than waiting until the last moment. Garth Coates can assist throughout the life of a Student Visa, helping students plan ahead and prepare a stronger extension application where needed.
How can Garth Coates help with a Student Visa application?
Garth Coates supports international students with Student Visa applications by advising on eligibility, reviewing documents and helping present the application clearly and correctly. This can be especially useful where the case involves financial questions, English language evidence, timing concerns, previous immigration issues or urgent enrolment deadlines. Good preparation often makes a significant difference to how smoothly the application progresses.
Legal support can also be valuable after the initial application stage. Students may need help with extensions, compliance issues or liaising with their school, college or university. Garth Coates has experience in assisting individuals with Student Visa matters and helping resolve immigration issues before a course starts. That kind of practical support can help students focus on their education with greater confidence.
