A UK Civil Partner Visa is a family visa that allows a person to live in the UK with their civil partner where the UK-based partner is a British or Irish citizen, has settled status, or otherwise holds qualifying immigration status under the family visa rules. It is intended for couples in a legally recognised civil partnership who want to live together in Britain on a long-term basis.

To qualify, both partners must usually be aged 18 or over, the relationship must be genuine and subsisting, and the couple must intend to live together permanently in the UK. Applicants also need to meet requirements linked to finances, English language ability, and suitability under the immigration rules. A person can usually apply for a UK Civil Partner Visa if they are in a legally valid civil partnership with a qualifying partner in the UK. GOV.UK says some people are exempt, including applicants over 65, those with certain physical or mental conditions, and some people extending after 5 years in the UK on a family visa as a partner.

For a first family visa application as a partner, the required level is generally CEFR A1 for speaking and listening. English can often be proved through an approved Secure English Language Test, an eligible degree taught in English, or nationality from a recognised English-speaking country, depending on the rules. A Civil Partner Visa sits within the wider family visa route, which is designed for people who want to live in the UK with their partner for more than 6 months. For many applicants, this route can lead to indefinite leave to remain once the required period in the UK has been completed and the ongoing requirements continue to be met.

In practice, many partner-route applicants may become eligible to apply for settlement after 5 years in the UK, provided they continue to meet the relationship, financial, accommodation, English language, and other immigration requirements. This makes it important to think beyond the initial application and plan for extensions as well. In some cases, yes. A person already in the UK on another visa may be able to switch to the family visa partner route before their current permission expires. This can be a useful option for couples who are already living in Britain lawfully and want to regularise their position through the correct long-term family category.

However, switching is not always available. GOV.UK says that a person with a visitor visa, or permission for 6 months or less, will usually need to leave the UK and apply from overseas instead.
