In June 2026, access to the Global Talent visa UKRI endorsed-funder pathway widened when 13 additional AIRTO member organisations were added to UKRI’s list of approved UK host organisations. The change did not make every AIRTO member an endorsed funder. A researcher must still be hosted or employed by an approved organisation and work on a qualifying grant or award from a separate UKRI-endorsed funder.

What Has Changed

The endorsed-funder pathway offers fast-track endorsement for researchers making critical contributions to qualifying funded work. The grant must normally be worth at least £30,000, cover at least 2 years and come from a funder on UKRI’s approved list.

Applicants generally need at least 1 year remaining on their employment or hosting agreement and must spend at least 50% of their working time on the eligible grant.

The expansion allows more research organisations, Catapult Centres and laboratories to host eligible international researchers. It does not remove the applicant-level requirements or replace the endorsement process.

The March 2026 Rule Changes

The March 2026 Statement of Changes clarified the separate fast-track route for eligible academic and research appointments. For that pathway, the role must require a PhD or equivalent academic, industrial or clinical research experience. The applicant must either have responsibility for research or innovation leadership and development, or perform research or innovation as a primary function of the role.

Those rules should not be confused with the UKRI endorsed-funder pathway. Someone directing a unique project generally needs a PhD or equivalent research experience. A person providing a critical technical or methodological contribution may instead qualify through a relevant degree or equivalent research experience.

Why the Route Is Attractive

Unlike the Skilled Worker visa, Global Talent does not require employer sponsorship or a prescribed minimum salary. Holders can change employers, work for more than one organisation and undertake permitted self-employment without obtaining a new Certificate of Sponsorship.

However, several research pathways still require an eligible appointment, fellowship, host organisation or funded project. A job offer is unnecessary for some applications but effectively required for the UKRI endorsed-funder pathway.

A business establishing its first UK presence may also consider the UK Expansion Worker visa where the requirements are met.

What R&D Employers Should Review

An employer with a sponsor licence should compare the routes before assigning a Certificate of Sponsorship. A Global Talent holder is not sponsored, so the employer does not carry route-specific sponsor reporting duties for that person. It must still complete a right-to-work check.

Having a sponsor licence does not make an organisation an approved UKRI host. These are separate systems, and existing sponsor licence compliance duties continue for sponsored workers.

Evidence also depends on the route. Publication records, citations and recommendation letters are especially relevant to full peer review. The endorsed-funder pathway focuses on the approved host, qualifying grant, applicant’s role, contract duration and time commitment.

Global Talent Fund Support

The £54 million Global Talent Fund was launched in June 2025 and is delivered through selected UK research organisations. Participating organisations can use their allocations to cover eligible research, relocation and visa costs, including the Immigration Health Surcharge for selected researchers and family members.

This support is not automatically available to every applicant. Researchers must be recruited through a participating organisation’s own programme.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the Global Talent visa require a job offer?

Not in every case. Applicants relying on a qualifying prestigious prize or full peer review may apply without one. The UKRI endorsed-funder pathway requires an eligible UK host or employer and qualifying funded work.

Can a researcher switch from Skilled Worker?

Yes, provided they meet the Global Talent requirements and are eligible for switching visas from inside the UK.

What are the current fees?

The total application fee is £766. An endorsed applicant pays £561 for endorsement and £205 for the visa stage. The Immigration Health Surcharge is usually £1,035 for each year of permission for each applicant.
