If you hold a standard Worker or Temporary Worker sponsor licence, you no longer need to renew it every four years. The renewal requirement was removed on 6 April 2024. In most cases, a licence now remains valid until it is surrendered or revoked. The main exceptions are UK Expansion Worker and Scale-up licences, which can only be held for a maximum of four years.
That makes ongoing sponsor duties and compliance more important. Record keeping, reporting and HR systems can still be examined through Home Office compliance activity.
What still runs on a clock
Annual allocations of undefined Certificates of Sponsorship still operate on an allocation year. For most newer sponsors, that period runs for 12 months from the date the licence or subsequent allocation was granted. Some legacy licences converted from Tier 2 operate from 6 April to 5 April.
A-rated sponsors on eligible routes can receive an automatic allocation equal to the number of CoS they assigned in the previous year. Otherwise, a manual renewal request can be submitted up to three months before the allocation year ends. Unused CoS do not carry forward.
Sponsors should also keep key personnel on a sponsor licence up to date. Changes affecting sponsored workers normally need reporting within 10 working days, while most relevant organisational changes must be reported within 20 working days. See business changes that trigger sponsor reporting.

Adding routes to an existing licence
Employers sometimes use “extension” to mean expanding the scope of an existing licence. A business holding Skilled Worker visa sponsorship may later need another Worker or Temporary Worker route. A founder using what is commonly described as self sponsorship in the UK may also need the licence scope to reflect the business’s actual recruitment plans.
Adding a Temporary Worker licence to an existing Worker licence currently attracts no Home Office fee. Adding a Worker licence to an existing Temporary Worker licence costs £1,071 for a medium or large sponsor and no fee for a small or charitable sponsor. This is an extension of scope rather than a fresh sponsor licence application.
Refresh your evidence before the Home Office asks
An annual internal review should confirm that contracts, salaries, job descriptions, right-to-work evidence, contact details and absence records match what appears in the Sponsorship Management System.
Review the guidance on sponsor licence compliance visits alongside sponsor licence suspension or revocation. Employers should also revisit the sponsor licence costs guide and the May 2026 sponsor guidance update. Current official rules are available through the GOV.UK sponsorship pages.
Frequently asked questions
Do sponsor licences still need renewing?
Usually not. Standard Worker and Temporary Worker licences generally remain valid until surrendered or revoked. UK Expansion Worker and Scale-up licences remain subject to maximum four-year periods.
Can a sponsor licence still be lost?
Yes. Serious or repeated non-compliance can lead to downgrade, suspension or revocation. Sponsored workers may then have their immigration permission affected. Someone working towards ILR based on long residence should obtain advice promptly if their sponsor loses its licence.
How long does adding a route take?
There is no guaranteed standard timeframe for every extension-of-scope request. Some sponsorship management changes can take up to 18 weeks, depending on the request and any additional checks. Priority processing is available only for specified post-licence requests.
If your sponsor records have not been reviewed recently, speak to the UK immigration solicitors at Garth Coates for advice on your current compliance position.
